VICC Race Day #5 - Season Finale & Vienna Championships

The fifth and final VICC Race Day of 2026 rolled onto the Cyclodrom on the Donauinsel on Sunday, 13 September and it was the biggest of the year. This one doubled as the Wiener Landesmeisterschaft Kriterium (Vienna State Championship), so new champions were crowned across the age groups, while the season-long Ströck Donauinselcup was decided on the very same day. Six races filled the programme, from balance-bike beginners to a flat-out elite men's bunch. Here's how the finale unfolded.

The Kids' Races (U5 & U7)

The day belonged first to the very youngest, with a dedicated race each for the U7s (born 2020–21) and the U5s (born 2022–23). True to the club's ethos, these are all about a first, fun taste of racing rather than results: little riders on balance bikes and first pedal bikes, helmets and gloves on, no entry fee and no pressure, just a lap of the Cyclodrom to a wall of cheering from parents and clubmates, with every child collecting a medal at the prize ceremony straight afterwards. It's where the next generation of the peloton gets its start, and this year's crop looked like they had a blast.

Race 1 — U9 & U11 (4,8 km)

The school-age racers got the "big" programme underway, and Robin Nagel (ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) was in a class of his own, sweeping all four sprints for a perfect 20 points and the win. Behind him it was desperately close: Sophie Wenschitz (ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) and Maximilian Schabauer (Bike the bugles Krumbach) finished level on 10 points, with Sophie taking second. The new Vienna Champions were crowned here too, Eren Schrenk (U11 men), Sophie Wenschitz (U11 women) and Thea Wenschitz (U9 women), all flying the ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien colours

Race 2 - U13 & WU15 (4,8 km)

Arun Seefeld (ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) continued his stellar season with a dominant ride in the U13 boys' race, racking up 35 points ahead of Paul Ritter and Fabian Delacher. The U13 girls served up the tightest finish of the day: Jana Isak and Valentina Ritter (both RC Sparkasse Pernitz) tied on four points, with Isak edging it on countback, while Lisa Bramauer-Averintsev took the Vienna Championship as the top city rider. Ilvie Wafler flew the flag solo in WU15 to claim the Vienna U15 women's title.

Race 3 - Women, Youth & Masters (21,63 km, avg 41,02 km/h)

The combined race threw women, youth and masters riders together over 21.6 km, and it was decided right from the gun: Mathieu Grandgirard and Michael Kröll (Geizhals.at VICCRD) as well as 14-year-old Lucas Nagel (ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) forged clear as a three-man breakaway that stayed away all the way to the finish, the trio lapping the rest of the field for a 20-point bonus apiece. Grandgirard put on a show up front, adding a string of sprint wins to finish on a commanding 60 points, with Kröll second on 49. The ride of the race, though, belonged to young Nagel, racing up against grown men in that lead group, the U15 rider landed on the overall podium with 44 points. Lisa Csenar was the strongest of the women's field.

Race 4 - Elite / Amateur / Master Men (30,9 km, avg 45,00 km/h)

The main event was the fastest race of the day, run off at a scorching 45 km/h — and tactically it was a straight duel between the day's two biggest teams, RH77 Factory Racing and Geizhals.at VICCRD, going head to head for the Vienna Championship. VICCRD struck first through Jakob Ulreich, who swept maximum points in four of the first five sprint laps.

But the decisive move came between points laps seven and eight, when Matthias Krizek (RH77 Factory Racing) and Christian Kromoser (Geizhals.at VICCRD) slipped clear together and stayed away to the finish, hoovering up maximum sprint points and the tempo points in between. Krizek took the double-point final sprint to seal the win on 34 points, with RH77's Jakob Brandl — the reigning Austrian Amateur Criterium Champion — completing a team 1-2 in second on 26. Kromoser held third on 23, pipping clubmate Ulreich on countback to be crowned Vienna Amateur Champion.

Behind the result it was a real team effort: RH77 owner Rene Haselbacher rode entirely in the service of his teammates' win, while his son Rene Haselbacher Jr., racing as a Junior, took a fine fifth. And the youngest rider in the whole bunch, Fred Steindl, more than held his own against the men to finish a superb sixth.
