VICC Race Day #4 - Race Report

Round four of the VICC Race Day series rolled onto the Cyclodrom on the Donauinsel on Thursday, 3 September, and once again the club's criterium circuit delivered a full evening of close, fast racing. Three races took to the tight, technical loop across the night, spanning the entire spectrum of the club: from our youngest riders learning the ropes in a bike-handling omnium, through a combined women's and youth field, to a deep and seriously quick men's bunch. Here's how each one played out.
Race 1 — Youngsters' Omnium (MW-U9 / MW-U11 / WU13)
The day's youngest racers opened proceedings with a three-part omnium that rewarded all-round riders: a technical section combining bike-handling exercises with a timed course, an elimination race, and a closing criterium, with points from each rolled into one overall total. Maximilian Schabauer (Bike the bugles Krumbach) set the tone by winning the technical test outright, then backed it up with strong showings in both races to take the overall win on 112 points. Jana Isak (ARBÖ RC Sparkasse Pernitz) was the standout racer of the group, she won the elimination and finished runner-up overall on 102. The fight for the final podium spot went down to the wire: Robin Nagel and Sophie Wenschitz (both ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) tied on 100 points, with Robin taking third thanks to his stronger criterium. Thea Wenschitz and Emma Wegerer, both born in 2018, were the bravest of the bunch, mixing it up with older riders all afternoon.
Race 2 — Criterium, Women & Youth (18.5 km, avg 37.1 km/h)
The second race brought the women's fields together with the junior boys over 18.5 km, and it turned into a one-man show. Lucas Nagel (U15, ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) was simply untouchable, scooping up points in every single sprint and slamming the door shut with the double-point finale to finish on a near-perfect 40 points, and first across the line for good measure. Behind him, Magdalena Papst (Women U23, Geizhals.at VICCRD) was the strongest of the rest and comfortably the day's top woman with 25 points, ahead of Arun Seefeld (U13, ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM-Wien) on 14. As always in the crit, the lap penalties reshuffled the order below: Flora Krisch crossed the line a fine fifth but slipped down the standings after losing laps, a reminder that in this format staying on the pace matters as much as the sprint. Marlene Kirchner led home the amateur women.
Race 3 — Criterium, Men (30.9 km, avg 44.5 km/h)
The main event lived up to its billing, a fast and tactical 30.9 km run off at a blistering 44.5 km/h average. Christian Kromoser (Geizhals.at VICCRD) rode the smartest race of anyone. He formed a breakaway with teammate Roman Nagiller and the pair scooped up the points at sprints 7, 8 and 9, plus the tempo points in between, to build a total no one could match. It added up to 26 points, and the win. It was anything but comfortable, though: Philip Sanjath (Team Weichberger-KTM) launched a late charge, winning the bunch sprint to cross the line first and banking the big double-point haul, but he came up a single agonising point short on 25. Jakob Brandl (RH77 Factory Racing) completed the podium on 20 after a consistently aggressive ride. A big, deep field of elite, amateur, masters and junior riders filled out the rest of the bunch, several of them paying the price of the relentless tempo by losing laps, proof of just how hard this one was raced from the gun.
